Knowing When To Replace Existing Lifts
If you ask a shop owner when is the best time to replace an old lift, you might hear something like "When the old one breaks!" But the fact is, there are a number of solid reasons why it may be beneficial to replace existing lifts before they reach the absolute failure point.
• Replacing old lifts in a planned way, proactively, puts you in control of your shop schedule and avoids the "emergencies" that may arise when a lift fails unexpectedly. You can install new lifts after-hours or during slow times when it will have little or no impact on your revenue stream. Budgeting the expenses, versus "getting surprised" will reduce losses due to downtime.
• When older lifts fail, it can often result in a spill of oil into the soil or sewer system. This type of accident can carry a high cost.
• If your service business is in a growth mode (or if you’re planning future growth) you may want to consider new lifts that offer higher productivity and can handle more vehicles per day.
• With the advent of sport utilities and larger pick-up trucks, the mix of vehicles is larger and heavier than in years past. Many older lifts are not up to the task. Also, there is a wider range of imports, vans and other vehicle types. Each vehicle has unique lifting requirements, and many of the older lifts were not designed to safely lift these configurations.
• If you are planning to expand your service offering, you may need lifts to facilitate special types of service (for example, heavy-duty trucks, alignment, quick-lube, etc.).
The bottom line on lift replacement:
When you factor all the "hidden costs" associated with operating older, outdated lifts, a planned program of lift replacement may be your best business decision. These hidden costs can include lower productivity, possible downtime and lost business, safety issues and environmental concerns. New lifts may also be the first step in a strategy of business growth and improving overall service quality.
